The American Silver Eagle is the world’s most popular silver bullion coin with well of 500 million sold from 1986 -2017.

Here are some of the reasons for the runaway success of the American Silver Eagle:

History

The American Silver Eagle coin was a by-product of Gold Commission established by President Reagan in 1981 to examine the feasibility of bringing back the gold standard abandoned by President Nixon in 1981. As part of his work in connection with the Gold Commission, Congressman Ron Paul presented the recommendation that gold and silver coins be once again minted by the United States Mint. While the gold standard was never adopted, the idea that the U.S. Mint begin producing gold and silver coins again was. The American Silver Eagle began production in 1986 and became the first annually minted silver coin produced by the United States Mint since mintage of 90% silver dimes, quarters and half dollars were halted in 1965.

$1 Face Value/Legal Tender

The American Silver Eagle has a face value of $1 making it a “silver dollar”. It is legal tender of the United States of America and contains an ounce of pure silver.

Size

The one ounce size of the American Silver Eagle allows small and large investors to purchase and stack them conveniently. American Silver Eagle coins come in Brilliant Uncirculated condition and are available for sale individually, in rolls of twenty or in monster boxes of 500 coins.

Purity

American Silver Eagles are composed of .9993 silver and .0007 copper (unlike pre 1965 dimes, quarter, half dollars and dollars that were minted with .900 silver and .100 copper).

Trust

Because American Silver Eagles are produced by the U.S. Mint, a division of the U.S. Treasury, the most powerful Treasury in the world, U.S. and international investors are assured of the purity and authenticity of the coins.

Design

The American Silver Eagle is a highly attractive coin that features a walking lady liberty on the obverse. Those familiar with the Liberty Walking half dollar (1916-1947) will recognize her countenance as substantially the same as appears on that coin. Also on the obverse are the date and the words “Liberty” and “In God We Trust” On the back a depiction of a bald eagle is featured with the words “1 Oz. Fine Silver” “One Dollar” and “United States of America”. American silver eagle coins are minted at the United States Philadelphia, San Francisco and West Point mints. The mint mark for West Point (W) and San Francisco (S) appears on the reverse to the bald eagle’s left talon that is clutching an olive branch. Silver eagles minted in Philadelphia contain no mint mark.

The American Silver Eagle features a recycled design of Adolph A. Weinman that was first used on the Liberty Walking half dollar. His initials can be found on the hem of lady liberty’s gown. The reverse was designed by John Mercanti who was the Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint when the Silver Eagle was first released.

Because the design of the American Silver Eagle has not changed since 1986, investors can remain certain that each silver eagle is fungible with other silver eagle coins in terms of size and purity.

High Annual Mintage

Because the American Silver Eagle has been minted in amounts well over 500 million and annually since 1986, there is a certainty of availability and high recognizability that gives comfort to silver investors.

Higher Resale Value

American Silver Eagle coins generally command a premium over other silver rounds and bars as the factors above provide support for their value. Indeed, because the American Silver Eagle has a history well over thirty years, a collector community has developed in which collectors attempt to complete entire sets of American Silver Eagles from 1986-2017. As such, some rarer dates in the American Silver Eagle series command an even higher premium than the generic American Silver Eagle premium over other silver products.
