Low Gold Price Offers Opportunities to Acquire Historic Pre-1933 U.S. Gold Coins at Attractive Prices

Until 1933, the U.S. Mint produced gold coins for use in general circulation. Pursuant to the Act of April 2, 1792, the first U.S. gold coins were minted in 1795-1796. These initial gold coins were the Capped Bust Eagles (face values $2.50, $5.00 and $10.00) and were .9167 fine gold (22K) – the same percentage gold mix that today’s American Gold Eagles are minted. In 1834, the fineness of the gold used in the minting of U.S. gold coins was changed from .9167 to .8992 and changed again 1837 to .900 where it remained as long as U.S. general circulation gold coins were minted.

In connection with President Roosevelt’s Executive order 6102 of April 5th 1933 “forbidding the hoarding of gold coin, gold bullion, and gold certificates within the continental United States,” the U.S. Mint ceased producing gold coins for general circulation.

During the 138 year history of gold coins in the America, the United States Mint produced the following coins:

One Dollar Gold Coins (1849-1889)
Two Dollar Fifty Cents Gold Coins – Quarter Eagles (1796 – 1929)
Three Dollar Gold Pieces (1854 – 1889)
Four Dollar Gold Pieces (1879- 1880)
Five Dollar Gold Pieces – Half Eagles (1795 – 1929)
Ten Dollar Gold Pieces – Eagles (1795 – 1933)
Twenty Dollar Gold Pieces Double Eagles (1849 – 1933)

The most common gold coins available today for purchase near the price of simple bullion coins are the Quarter Eagles ($2.50 face value), Half Eagles ($5.00), Eagles ($10.00) and Double Eagles ($20)
