Silver In Ancient Egypt
Silver was a late comer to the Egyptian Dynastic scene. When silver was introduced to Egyptian culture around the time of Queen Hetephere (2575 BC – 2551 BC) of the Fourth Dynasty (2613 BC- 2498 BC), it was generally forged in thinner quantities than gold jewelry, indicating that it was probably considered more valuable than gold. By the 12th-19th dynasties (1991 BC-1189 BC), however, silver had fallen to about half the price of gold.
While gold had been referred to throughout the ancient Egyptian period by the symbol nebu, silver was not given a proper symbol and was referred to simply as “white metal”. When a silver hieroglyph was adopted it was a created (ligatured) from the gold hieroglyph, indicating that the ancient Egyptians viewed the two precious metals as similar.
From the 18th-20th Dynasties 1549–1077, gold was used more than silver in jewelry and was found in smaller quantities in burial tombs of that period. For example, vasts amount of gold were found in the tomb of Tutankhamen (ruled 1332–1323 BC), an Egyptian pharaoh of the 18th dynasty, while only small amounts of silver relics were present in his tomb.
By the 21-22nd dynasties (1069 BC-720 BC) the pharaohs were buried with more silver found in their tombs than those of previous pharaohs, although gold was still present. Indeed, the pharaoh Heqakheperre Shoshenq II (died 888 BC) was buried in a gilded hawkhead solid silver coffin. His funeral mask, however, was gold.
