Sales of American Gold Eagle Coins Spike in January Year Over Year

The U.S. Mint sold 89,000 one ounce American Gold Eagle coins (AGE’s) in January 2016. This reflects a 73% increase over sales of one ounce AGE’s in January last year (when 51,500 were sold).

In January 2016, the U.S. Mint also sold 145,000 one tenth ounce AGEs (up 26% from 115,000 sold in January 2015); 36,000 one quarter ounce AGEs (unchanged from 36,000 sold in January 2016), and 23,000 one half ounce AGEs (up 28% from 18,000 sold in January 2016).

Total Ounces of Gold Sold Attributable to American Gold Eagle Coins Was Up 53% In January 2016 over January 2015

Total sales of American Gold Eagle coins in January 2016 were 293,000, representing 124,000 ounces of gold, up 33% (from 220,500 AGEs sold in January 2015) and 53% respectively (from 81,000 ounces in January 2015).

Sales of American Gold Eagles soared in the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008-2009, but have fallen off in recent years as the U.S. Mint began to selling record amounts of American Silver Eagles the past three years.

According to Kitco, the average spot price of gold in January 2016 was $1097.37 an ounce vs. $1251.88 an ounce in January 2015, or 12.3% lower.

If sales of one ounce American Gold Eagle sales continue at 50%+ higher than last year, sales will approach 1,000,000 ounces, rivalling the sales figures of 2009-2011.

American Gold Eagle coins contain one ounce of pure gold but also have 3% silver and 5% copper mixed in the alloy, bringing the total weight of a one ounce American Gold Eagle coin to nearly 1.20 ounces.
