About Grading Services and Graded Coins

The PCGS, along with NGC are the two major coin grading services. PCGS began offering its third party guaranteed appraisal of coins’ condition and authenticity in 1986 with the goal of becoming a trusted service for coin dealers and collectors. NGC was founded a year later in 1987. NGC’s stated purpose was similar to PCGS’s – to provide a third party “standard of consistent and accurate grading”.

Both grading companies use the 70 point scale created by Dr. William H Sheldon in the mid 20th Century. Dr. Sheldon’s scale was intended to provide greater clarity to the commonly used terms to grade coins e.g. “fair poor”, “about good”, “good”, “very good”, “fine”, “very fine”, “extremely fine” “about uncirculated” and “uncirculated”. For example, not all uncirculated coins are the same. They are rated on a scale of 60-70. Some uncirculated coins may have minor imperfections and thus be graded mint state 60 (MS 60) and others may be perfect earning them a MS 70 grade.

A grade of MS-70 generally mean a perfect coin with no visible imperfections even at 5X magnification! A MS-69 coin is also an uncirculated and in “mint state” with according to NGC “nearly imperceptible imperfections”. The gradings are determined by at least two graders.

After grading the graded coins are encapsulated in sonically sealed plastic containers or slabs that display both sides of the coins with the name, date, grade, unique certification number and a bar code. A hologram is also affixed to the slab to ensure authenticity. Slabbed coins provide air tight protection for the storage of graded coins.

Counterfeits can be identified if the bar codes don’t match the PCGS or NGC data base.

Coins graded in the plastic PCGS holders often trade for higher premiums that ungraded coins as the grading is recognized by collectors and guarantees not only the grading but the authenticity of the coin.

BGASC.com is currently offering a limited quantity of MS-69 graded one ounce American Gold Eagles from NGC or PCGS.

About the American Gold Eagle coin:

The United States Mint began production of the American Gold Eagle in 1986 in accordance with the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 and was the first gold coin produced by the United States Mint since 1934.

The American Gold Eagle features a recycled design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens that was first used on the Saint-Gaudens twenty dollar gold piece (1907-1933). The front of a Saint Gaudens and American Gold Eagle coin features a walking lady liberty depiction. Augustus Saint-Gaudens initials can be found on the hem of lady liberty’s gown.

On the back of American Gold Eagle coins is a depiction of a bald eagle flying towards its nest where a baby eagle awaits with the words “United States of America” “e pluribus unum” and “In God We Trust”. On the one ounce gold eagle the words “1 Oz. Fine Gold” and “50 Dollars” also appear. The reverse was designed by Miley Busiek whose initials can be found on the reverse beneath the eagle’s nest.

American Gold Eagles are 22K gold and are composed of .9167 gold, .0533 copper and .03 silver.
