U.S. Mint vs Perth Mint
Perth Mint Silver Sales Challenge American Silver Eagle Sales.
The U.S. Mint has been the largest seller of silver bullion coins for more than thirty years. Since the introduction of the American Silver Eagle coin (ASE) in late 1986, the U.S. Mint has sold well over a half a billion ASEs. The Perth Mint, in contrast, has generally focused more on gold sales and semi-numismatic silver coins like the limited mintage Perth Mint silver coins the Kookaburra and the Koala. That focused changed in 2015, when the Perth Mint introduced its first silver bullion coin to be minted in amounts required to meet demand – the Australian Silver Kangaroo. The Perth Mint tapped in to additional demand with the Australian Silver Kangaroo and their silver sales went from averaging well under 450,000 ounces a month to about one million ounces a month.
While the U.S. mint still sells more American Silver Eagles than all Perth Mint retail silver coins combined, the Perth Mint has over the past year outsold the U.S. Mint four of the past fourteen months.
From January 2017 – February 2018, the U.S. Mint sold 22,243,000 one ounce American Sivler Eagles while the Perth Mint sold approximately 11,700,000 ounces of silver during the same period.

In a dramatic reversal of fortunes, the Perth Mint’s gold sales have been out selling the U.S. Mint gold sales for the twelve of the past fourteen months. The U.S. Mint historically sells more gold than the Perth Mint, but over the past year due to increased Perth Mint sales and declining U.S. Mint sales, the Perth Mint has managed to out sell the U.S. Mint. From January 2017 – February 2018, the U.S. Mint sold 269,000 one ounce American Gold Eagles while the Perth Mint sold 432,000 ounces of gold during the same period.
